Infrastructure (or capital goods) are products with a longer lifetime, not meant for consumption. Examples of infrastructure are buildings, electricity or gas grids, roads, rails, harbors, mines, production facilities, machinery, tools and vehicles.
The reference unit of infrastructure products in the database is most commonly “unit”, e.g., 1 unit of power plant. Infrastructure processes usually cover the initial construction, the maintenance during its lifetime, the land occupation and land transformation (if applicable), the decommissioning, and waste treatment at the end of the lifetime.
In SimaPro by default infrastructure processes are included in your calculated results. System processes are always calculated including infrastructure processes. See also: Why do I get different results when I compare between the same ecoinvent unit and system processes?
To exclude infrastructure processes you can select the checkbox "Exclude infrastructure processes" in the SimaPro calculation setup. This option will affect all unit processes in your model that are labeled as infrastructure processes. Infrastructure system processes will only be recognized whenever you directly refer to them in your model.
What are infrastructure processes, and how to include or exclude them?
